A mix of traditional Japanese green tea & roasted brown rice, this brew has gone by many names; "popcorn tea" due to some of the grains of rice that burst during the roasting process, or "the people's tea" for its historical popularity among the working class, although it has now spread to most of Japan's kitchens. The drink often has a light yellow hue, which belies its warm, filling taste.
The sugar and starch from the rice cause the tea to have a warm, full flavour that is similar to that of nuts. Its flavour is mild and combines the fresh grassy taste of green tea with the aroma of the roasted rice.
